Director of Library Services and Instructional Technology: Guilford College

The Director of Library Services and Instructional Technology provides strategic leadership for all functions of the library, including oversight of instructional technology, collection development, information literacy, and services for students and faculty. The director is responsible for the overall management of the Library, including personnel administration, program development and evaluation, organization of operations, budgeting, and external relations both within and beyond the College and collaborates with other campus departments in support of the College’s mission.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Articulates and supports the contribution of Hege Library, both actual and potential, to teaching, learning and research at Guilford College;
  • Collaborates with all stakeholders, disciplines, and programs to provide a learning environment and appropriate resources to encourage student engagement in all aspects of inquiry, problem solving, and critical thinking;
  • Provides leadership and support for all library operations including budget, personnel, collection development, policy, instruction, technology (including the institution’s course management system and instruction initiatives), and facilities;
  • Works with faculty, department chairs, senior administrators, and IT&S staff to ensure academic technology, library, and research initiatives are aligned with institutional strategic goals and resources.
  • Responsible for the research, evaluation, and facilitation of innovative applications of technology, concentrating on research, pedagogy, curricular innovation, and institutional priorities for faculty and students.
  • Facilitates both information and technology literacy at all levels and across disciplines among faculty and students.
  • Works with advancement staff to establish and build relationships with individuals, corporations, and foundations. Seeks donations, gifts-in-kind, and grants, as appropriate, which support capital and operating budgets.
  • Serves as an advocate and communicates the Library’s services and needs to Guilford faculty, staff and students and outside groups, including alumni, vendor representatives and library professional organizations and consortia. Among these is NC-PALS, a consortium of selected area colleges;
  • Ensures compliance with all licensing and copyright laws and regulations;
  • Maintains appropriate documentation and coordinates assessment and reporting of library operations;
  • Serves on college committees for academic policy and governance as elected or appointed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited graduate degree or ALA-recognized international equivalent
  • Five years of supervisory, administrative, and management experience in a higher education library setting with a strong instructional technology component.
  • Demonstrated success in fostering a collaborative and collegial environment that uses consensus building in decision-making. Mentoring experience is desired.
  • A strong understanding of new and developing technologies in higher education.
  • Knowledge of current issues and trends in librarianship such as instructional technology, pedagogy, copyright, scholarly communication, and assessment.
  • Proven ability to work with professional integrity and a commitment to 
building strong relationships that respect diversity of identity, background, and perspectives.
